Born from military necessity in the nineteenth century, its tightly woven cotton twill was first used by European soldiers stationed in the tropics. When American troops wore the same cloth during the Spanish–American War, they adopted the name given by Spanish suppliers, “pantalones chinos,” Chinese pants. The name and the cloth endured, a linguistic echo of global trade that would one day define American style.

When our soldiers returned home, they brought the trousers with them. What began as utilitarian military dress evolved into an American staple: neat enough for the office, sturdy enough for work, and simple enough for everyday life. By mid-century, chinos had become part of the American wardrobe vernacular, worn by students, tradesmen, and professionals alike. A split waistband offers subtle flex and easy alteration, a classic mark of fine craftsmanship. A generous inlay of extra cloth through the seat and inseam allows for future tailoring, extending the life and fit of the garment over time.
